For the third consecutive year, nine students from the Preuss School at UCSD, a charter school that provides rigorous college prep for low income students, came to Sanford-Burnham to put on their lab coats and safety goggles and learn about biomedical research by doing it. The weeklong internships, sponsored by philanthropists Peter Preuss and Wain Fishburn, took these students to four labs, where they investigated aging, rare bone diseases, programmed cell death and drug discovery. At the end of the week, the students presented their research at a luncheon in their honor.
For the students, who are all entering their junior year, the time spent in Sanford-Burnham labs has provided new information to help guide them to a career path.

“This is a great opportunity to see behind the scenes,” said Mustafa Malik, “to have a close-up opportunity to view the science and the technology.”
Sharon Vongvanith echoed this sentiment. “I’ve always wanted to be an obstetrician, and I wasn’t really sure about research. Now I’ve developed a better appreciation for medical research. I want to make a mark on this world, whether as an obstetrician or a research scientist.”

These students will be eligible to apply for the Continuing Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) Program. This joint initiative between Sanford-Burnham and UC San Diego provides financial and intellectual support for select Preuss School graduates to earn a Ph.D. in the life sciences. The program begins before their senior year in high school and takes them through their undergraduate education, ultimately helping them earn their doctoral degrees.

The Preuss School internships at Sanford-Burnham were recently highlighted on San Diego’s NPR affiliate, KPBS
